Mentorship with Angelo De Petta

November 2015  to August 2016

This collaboration is between MPG and Angelo di Petta, an initiative taken to provide a focused learning experience for members of our guild.

Angelo di Petta, a graduate of the Ontario College of Art (OCAD), has taught at OCAD from 1975 until his retirement in 2012. His work has been exhibited through numerous solo and group exhibitions, nationally and internationally. He has also executed major public commissions in Canada and the United States.

In this mentorship, Angelo will bring a wealth of knowledge and experience in form, function, design and decoration to challenge each of the participating artists to explore, develop and elevate their work. More on Angelo can be found a http://dipetta.com/

This mentorship is open to all MPG members at any skill level with the only requirement being that you are keen and motivated to participate. The program is intended to guide you to develop new ways of thinking about your work and take creative risks through critical reflection and collaboration. This will be a transformative learning experience for all participating members as long as you are willing and able to work towards your goals and make a commitment to attend all meetings when possible. Keep in mind that this could help you work towards MPG’s juried exhibition ‘Emerge’ being organized for July, 2016. At the end of the Mentorship we will plan a final Mentorship Exhibition in the Fall of 2016.

The program will begin with a day session at which participants will present their work. Each participant will then be asked to set learning goals and objectives to guide them through their journey over the next ten months. Artists will come together with Angelo for full day sessions approximately once every 6 weeks over the ten month period to review their progress. You will be asked to participate in group critiques and to review and revise objectives as necessary.

Ways of Using Slip with Frieda Pereira

Saturday, May 9th, 2015

This hands-on Workshop will explore different ways slips are used to decorate your work. We will first go over the process of making a base slip from a recipe and adding stains or oxides for colour.

You will experiment with:

- Layering slips

- Mishima

- Scraffito

- Using slip to create texture

You are encouraged to bring 4  to 5 leather hard pieces to try these processes. The tools you bring should include carving tools, a pin tool, a serrated rib, brushes and sponges.

Remember to come prepared with bisque and glaze pieces as mentioned above.

Ceramic Surface Decorating with Lindsay Montgomery and Marc Egan

Sunday, April 2nd, 2016

Toronto ceramic artists Lindsay Montgomery and Marc Egan are teaming up to present an exciting glazing and decorating workshop for the Mississauga Potters' Guild. Lindsay and Marc are known for their elaborately decorated surfaces and their unabashed use of colour. This workshop will introduce students to maiolica, cuerda seca, and china painting traditions and techniques. In addition to demonstrations by the artists, participants will have an opportunity to use these techniques on their own work. We will discuss a variety of ways to develop imagery and design for a three dimensional surface. The techniques demonstrated can be used from cone 04 to cone 6. Marc will make his extensive knowledge of glaze chemistry and glaze colour development available to all.

All glazes and decorating materials are included. Workshop participants are expected to bring a few bisque-fired pots or tiles and one glaze-fired work, preferably with a glossy surface, for china painting. Paint brushes and basic pottery tools to be supplied by participants.

Throwing Workshop with George Cho

Sunday, June 20th & Saturday, June 25th, 2015

At our May General Meeting, those of you who stayed for the second part of the meeting enjoyed George Cho’s presentation and throwing demo. A few asked me if I could organize a throwing workshop with George.

I am pleased to say that George has agreed to do a two-day workshop with us in June! The workshop was set up so that you can hone your skill on days in between the Saturday and Thursday.

On the Saturday, George will throw large pieces, some composite forms, pitchers, trays and ewers with long spouts. You chose what forms you would like to experiment with. Lunch will be a potluck. Please bring something for all to enjoy.
